Scottish Power - no bills for over 12 months?

I need advice please.

My Dad passed away in April 2013. In November 2013 my husband and I moved into Dads home. When he died I contacted Scottish Power and sent in the death certificate etc and in November phoned to take over the account, set up a direct debit to pay for our electricity, thought all was well.

I hold my hands up, I didn't check they were taking any money, but when I look at my list of direct debits Scottish Power is listed, so I presumed all was ok.

When I received a letter from them addressed to Dad in October 2014 I thought something must be wrong, phoned to be told Dads account was closed (so why are they writing to him?) I checked my bank and No money has been taken. On the advice of the lady I spoke to who could not tell me what I owed, I set up a standing order, she said it was a computer error that my money wasn't being taken.

Now worried about the size of the bill, I took her word that it would be looked into. I heard nothing.

I have given them meter readings (which one of them could find, the next person I spoke to couldn't)

I phoned on 21st November, an hour waiting on the phone to be told that you haven't paid anything what is your problem?? So I raised a complaint.

Their two week come back came back today (spot on two months!) my phone calls in the interim were a waste of time as my complaint hadn't been allocated.

My complaint was 1. I have not been billed since November 2013. 2. I had closed Dads account but still get letters.

The response to the complaint was that they are sorry I had trouble logging meter readings, and that if I see dads account when I log in online (which I never have) it is dormant.

What do I do?!

I am not a dishonest person, I thought I was paying. Last time I phoned to ask for my balance I was told I was x amount in credit, which equals my standing order payments so they haven't been taken against my account.

We haven't been cut off, but we apparently aren't paying for our electric. I've thought about trying to leave them to prompt a god awful bill that I won't be able to pay, but reading on here you can't even leave them easily.

Sorry it's long, as short as I could make it 😒

  • I have had gas installed for 12months and repeatedly contacted Scottish power for 12months to inform them but it has never been dealt with properly. they said they would sort my bill out and few days later I receive a run through for my ELECTRICITY! But no GAS bill! I can't get my bill no matter what I do, I haven't saved for a years gas bill and this will put my child and I into more poverty.
I heard offgem has said that if you haven't been billed and you have tried your best over 12months to get your account and bill sorted then I shouldn't have to foot the bill?
If anyone else heard this or are able to point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks
  • if you haven't already, make a complaint (if you already have then take it too ombudsman) and put a claim of compensation in with it for your trouble.

I hadn't heard this but will look into it and let you know. I don't have that sort of money either which panics me.

How do I complain to the ombudsman? Sorry not been in this situation before x
  • first u need to make an official complaint to Scottish power, you are best off going straight to the top an email the Ceo as you will get a much quicker response, if you haven't already made a complaint , just google search ceo email address Scottish power.

I would suggest u don't ring and keep all communication by email or letter and keep all as proof

if after 8 weeks its still not been resolved go here and take your complaint to the energy ombudsman, http://www.ombudsman-services.org/energy.html everything u need will be on there

if/when you fill in your complaint with ombudsman be sure to add a reasonable amount for compensation, this will be paid to you if your complaint with the ombudsman is upheld
