Any help on EDF please?!

hi, i'm new and i have gone and got myself into a bit of a pickle, iv been with EDF for around a year and a half and after initially setting up on direct debit the direct debit was (somehow) cancelled on their end, not mine. i didn't notice that the direct debits weren't coming out (not because i'm super rich or anything, just because i assumed they were) anyway, after around 7 months i received a letter from EDF saying i owed £472. i understood sometimes mistakes happen so paid that off in full in January 2014. The same thing happened again, i set up direct debit and it wasn't set up on their end, i received a letter in April saying I owe £512, after calling them and asking what was going on they asked for my meter reading and said it was LOWER than the previous reading. my account was 'frozen' and i could not make any payments until this was investigated. in the meantime i received solicitors letter saying the debt from April was £945! After much tooing and frowing and not getting any answers because i spoke to a different adviser every time, In September i felt i had to accept the debt so i could move on, by this time the debt had mounted up to £1158! so i was advised to go onto a prepayment meter. I am paying £40 debt a month ( gas and electric) and in total am paying between 250-300 pound in energy!! i have called them and they said the electric meter was loaded with another £809 debt in November which was a mistake! surely they shouldn't be able to alter my meters without speaking to me and from the office without my knowledge! im starting to think they are taking money off my meter that i am not using because i should not be paying this much each month just for energy, financially its crippling me but i feel like such a small fish against a giant energy company and no body that works there seems to see what i am taking about, its like every figure i'v ever had from them has been plucked from the air! please, if you can help id really appreciate it.
