Lifespan of an inkjet printer?

I've got a Canon MP272, I think I bought it from Dixons when they were still on the go. I was wondering does it deteriorate? I need to replace the cartridges and I'm thinking is it worth it or should I get a new one? I know you don't get full cartridges in a new one but I have noticed smudgy ink on my prints and I'm sure I've read that the printer head or something wears out over time? I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks

Try removing the cartridges and clean the lower face with a tissue. When you fit a new cartridge, you are also fitting a new print head i.e. the print head is part of the cartridge. Personally I simply refill my Cannon carts with printer ink using a syringe - far cheaper! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

That's not always true. My previous Canon had a separate print head. The cost of a replacement print head was more than a brand new printer!
When that went kaput, a friend gave me his old Canon printer which has the print head built into the cartridge. It means replacement cartridges are more expensive (around £7 each instead of £1 each), but (despite being in storage for a few years) a new set of cartridges and it printed perfectly.0 -

Did I state that it was always the case?
You obviously have not checked to see what cartridges are actually used in the MP250 series printers that the OP has asked about. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

No, but that seemed to be your implication as saying, "When you fit a new cartridge..." can, in modern vernacular, also be taken to mean, "When one fits a new cartridge...".
Essentially, it was ambiguous, but since you didn't mention the printer specifically, I assumed it was more likely that you were talking about ink jet printers in general.0 -
i use a cotton bud on a regular basis by removing the cartridges and use the cotton bud on the injector pin0

Likewise and a tiny drop of water on the heads etc .
I even rescued one printer with a wet tissue soaking the heads for a few days .
Some printers you can get cleaning cartridges for .
Often the killer on printers is the ink waste tank full .
It can be cleaned but can also be a big big mess of a job .0 -
