Insurance won't cover the repair cost of the pipe itself if it's just old and corroded. However, some policies will cover the cost of repairs needed due to the leak of water (eg if the ceiling below does need repair work).
Might be worth checking your policy paperwork to see what cover you've got (and what the excess for it is). May not be worth claiming for a job this size but you never know.
House is a new-build, built in 2007, so I hope the pipes aren't old and corroded. If anything I'd put it down to p*ss-poor workmanship by the builders. We've had no end of issues, especially with the plumbing side. We had to have one area of ceiling replastered after a constant small leak from the shower waste pipe which they had bodged together and then gaffa-taped!
Unfortunately however, the house is shared ownership. The buildings insurance is covered by the HA, but they don't cover ANYTHING internal apparently... regardless of the fact that all the issues are caused by THEIR builders!
