Alternatives to ceiling heating

  • You have an E10 old white meter setup I assume, and your as yet unmentioned water is also E10. I once owned a flat [1981] with ceiling heat on an E10 tariff, the heating was instant, warm as toast and a very high comfort level. I kept it one winter and immediately after that winter dumped it and went E7 with 'weather watch'. I put storage radiators in and rewired the existing two element PartL tank into the E7 system. I left [cost savings] all the ceiling heat infrastructure in place and simply pulled the plug [isolated] the old system by putting the existing tails into a new set of duplicate CU's [cost savings] and the meter was reconfigured [cost savings] to two rather than three counters.

The old now non-heated ceiling panels as expected was very well insulated, a surprising and unexpected benefit after the storage radiators were installed was the ceilings capacity to insulate and reflect heat down once it took on the unexpected ancillary job of holding heat. It would be fair to say that most council / housing association housing stock had ceiling heating replaced by the early 80's, it and its E10 tariff was a killer cost wise. My suggestion go DUOheat, don't forget your cheap water heating and get rid of E10, its uncompetitive and impossible to find a cheaper provider. best of luck.
