Chrome optionally syncs bookmarks across devices for the same google account. Take a look in your settings and check if you are connected to your account.

I've no idea why you wouldn't be though if you were before.

  • It is not anything to do with this new thing that has appeared on Chrome in the last week or so -I think it is if you are sharing your PC then you can log out of your version of Chrome and then another member of the family can log in without logging out of the computer. I have not tried it yet but on the top right of chrome (on my home PC) my name appears.

  • Do you mean the Bookmark Bar is missing?

If so, click the little square box with the 3 horizontal lines (top right hand corner, just below the close window red X box), and click "Settings".

Under "Appearances", put a tick in the box called "Always show the bookmarks bar".

Not sure why the bar disappears, but it does it on mine too.

You haven't deleted the bookmarks on another device that is synced to that account have you?

I did this on one computer then went home and to my horror all the bookmarks I deleted had gone from there too.

***Luckily I had another computer and managed to disconnect that one from the network before turning it on so that i could pull a copy of the bookmarks file before it synced. I was then able import those back in!***

Hi it was all the bookmarks, guess a good lesson to back up. Luckily most of the bookmarks still in 'Firefox' so could import. But just curious what happened & correct procedure to recover.

    Thx

Though Chrome does a decent job of syncing I prefer XMarks as there is always a backup online.

A while before all this cross platform syncing appeared I produced my own php/mysql script for storing and maintaining bookmarks. I just use that as my homepage so I can maintain my bookmarks using whatever browser/platform I choose and they are available to me anywhere using any browser.
