Car insurance rip-off - Sainsburys

I phoned Sainsburys yesterday because I knew my car insurance was due but could not remember the exact date
I was told that the policy was automatically renewed two days ago, I have not recieved any notification of this despite them telling me that the documents were sent out.
I asked how much I had been charged, £989 was the answer....I nearly fell off my chair!
As I was still in the cooling off period I did a check and got the same cover for £271.....just the £718 difference then!
They of course tried to put me through to the retention team but I was not interested and have duly cancelled the policy,
How can a difference of this much be warranted....or even legal?

Price is unregulated and a pure commercial decision. They are legally obliged to inform you of the renewal beforehand and tell you what to do if you dont want to accept it but its your obligation to decide if that price is reasonable or if you want to go elsewhere.
You can register a complaint that you didnt receive their renewal notice but if their systems show that it was generated and sent then its not likely to get anywhere0 -
Nothing wrong with whats happened except you didnt receive the renewal notice.
Should have checked your current docs as the date its due is on there.0 -
I consider myself duly chastised
So sorry it won't happen again0 -
Yeah you need to keep on the ball. 2 years ago i paid my premium in full over the phone. But when i kept checking teh bak to see if they had taken it they had not.
After a week or so i phoned them to say dont you like my money. They took the money the same day.
Going back a few years i wouldnt have bothered, But you cant take the risk these days.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
