Switching a Single Rate Tariff with an Economy Seven Meter

We have an economy seven meter which was in the house when we moved in almost thirty years ago. We have never used the tariff, but give the reading to our energy supplier when requested - it always reads the same. A couple of months ago, the meter reader made a mistake and transposed a couple of digits making it look as though we had used economy seven units (although this part of the meter is disabled). This has somehow changed the national database. Recently tried to switch through MSE Energy Alert to a company called Extra Energy. They advise that only the bigger companies offer a single rate tariff on a two rate meter and so they will only supply our energy if we choose economy seven.
Seems that we are restricted to the bigger companies for our energy supply.

No, you just need to get your meter changed and you can have whoever you want
BG or EDF I believe will do it for free - try swapping to their E7 variable tariff, getting them to swap the meter to single rate and then go wherever you like. Other companies will charge you about £60 to change the meterNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Most energy suppliers can just add together the EC7 registers and bill you as if you are on a single rate meter. Its generally known as a totaliser.
But as the above poster suggested swap to EDF for a few months, request a meter exchange to a standard meter then you are free to swap away from EDF. EDF don't charge cancellation fees.0 -
Actually most energy suppliers won't add the two together AFAIK it's only BG that do but I'm happy to be proved wrongNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

Pretty sure EON does as well. I'm also fairly certain EDF requires a meter change, but as above I'd welcome being proven wrong. lol0 -
Edf can do totalisers and have doen for donkeys years. It does depend on the SSC of the meter and also speaking to an agent who knows how to do it.0

Morning All
Just thought I'd confirm, with Economy 7 meters we're able to add the day and night registers together and charge as a single rate. No need to change the meter.
This is only possible with Economy 7, though. We can't do it with other multi-rate meters like Economy 10, Economy 18, etc.
Hope this is of interest.
