Door Step Debt Collector??

Hello
Im new, anyway can someone help me out please? I just had a visit from a random man who knocked on my door and asked for me. He read my name from a tablet/ mobile device. I told him no one by that name lived at the address and closed the door.
Is it possible that this could be a door step debt collector? Ive been having letters from Moorcroft and various others about a debt that is almost statue barred. I had a catalogue in 2006 ish and got into difficulty, found myself with child and left my job. Moved around several times over the years and this still keeps following me. Ive never acknowleged the debt at all, yet when I move to somewhere new, usually once a year ( im in unstable private rented housing), I get a fishing letter "we are looking for the named person about a personal matter" relating to an address that I havent lived at for almost a decade! Needless to say these letters are ignored and following that I will recieve a bombardment of letters asking me to pay this and that. Again I ignore them. My mobile phone has a call filter and all numbers that are not in my phone list and usually barred.
I havent had any letters since november, the last one I got was one from Moorcroft which threatened doorstep action. Then it all went quiet, untill this random turns up at my door. Is it likely that he is the collector? I know they have no more power than the avon lady (quoted from another post) but I am a little nervous and to be honest I have enough on my plate. We are being evicted from our house too. Will this guy come back? he didnt leave a card when I shut the door in his face.
I once had an experience with a debt collector who I paid off, stopped the standing order to get them to write to me. They did and said I still owed the same amount as I started with, sfter paying it for 2 years! I refused to pay them any more, to which I was hounded constantly! I eventually argued with them and then went back to the original company who said the debt was clear. Yet the debt collector was about to make me pay all over again. I dont have to pay it. But this is the reason I refuse to deal with these people. I had 3 companies once chasing the same debt as well. Ridiculous. So any advice please?

  • Sounds like you know how to deal with them perfectly.

None of your business and shut the door works perfectly, just add in "you must not come back" before closing the door.

Haha i have paid the TV liecence. I should have found out who he was but i didnt want to stand around and chat to him. Anyone who knows me knows not to come to my door without an appointment or calling/texting first. Turning up unannounced and stating with tablet in hand "Im looking for Miss ???" Is only going to get you a door in the face :rotfl:

Why don't you deal with it properly like an adult instead of childishly slamming the door in someones face.

It wont go away and if you deal with it, one day you wont feel that people are hounding you and you wont be looking over your shoulder.

You could end up having a 'normal' life.

Yeah thanks for that useless insight and reply there. Abit harsh wasnt it? You know nothing about me!

In this day an age if you are on the electoral roll and are able to get credit then you will be in debt. Im not on the electoral roll because i do not want credit because i dont want to be in debt. I pay all my bills thank you very much. And yes if someone comes to my door demanding to speak to me without invitation they will get a door in the face.

So if you pay all your bills and you don't want to be in debt, why are you worrying about the person being a debt collector if you are so sure you owe nobody any money.

And yes, you are in debt, and you don't want to pay it, you have admitted that much in your original post.
    Remember the catalogue debt......

Seems a bit daft to be honest, if they try to ring you to make an appointment, you wouldn't answer the phone, if they come to your door you slam it in there face. ??????

Where on earth did you get the idea that if you are not on the electoral roll you cant get credit ???? Urban Myth I'm afraid.....

Like I say, be an adult and deal with it. It wont go away, If you are sure it is statute barred, send them an SB letter and start the ball rolling.

One should get their head out of their bum. I asked a question. Its a forum for people in all kinds of situations. I had a catalogue yes years ago! It was paid until i got pregnant and stopped working. I tried to negotiate a plan but they wanted more than i could afford. Im not starving to death to pay these people more than i can afford. Like most things i'll only be polite once. These debt collectors dont know their back side from their elbow. If 3 companies are chasing the same debt then who do you pay? I already said i paid a debt to a collector once who tried to take the debt twice. So now i refuse to deal with them and rightly so. Did you read that bit??? Too busy thinking you are better than me no doubt. Its very difficult to get credit if one is not on the electoral role. Thats a fact!

Dont comment if you cant say anything nice or be of any assistance. Yes maybe there are a few unpaid sums about but it amounts to hundreds not thousands and if these people had accepted my offers in the first place instead of being greedy they wouldnt need to waste time chasing me. If the original company wants to arrange something i will happily give them my card details. But no way am i paying some greedy debt collector that appears on my doorstep, sends me threatening letters or tries to communicate by an other means.

    Thank you

    I believe you are mistaken.

I have no mortgage, no loans, no debt on my credit cards - in fact, the only credit card I use is in credit by nearly £200. My utility accounts are paid up and in credit, one by nearly £500.

I am able to get about as much credit as I could possibly want if I had the desire to do so (had a mortgage, paid it off).

It's called self discipline & taking responsibility for your own actions. It seems there is little point me trying to explain that though.
