How to Decorate Baby Room When Not Pregnant Yet?

Hi All,

I think this is the best place to put this!

My OH and I have just reserved a new build house - It's due to be ready in June. It's around June/August that we will be moving in.

We're going from a 3 bed to a 4 bed and we want the 4th room to be a nursery. We have no other use for this room at the moment and I don't really want it to be a random empty room.

How would you all decorate the room (with furniture and paint etc) without spending too much money and without having to do it all over again when the baby is due? No one knows that we are going to be trying for a baby so I don't want to pre-decorate the room (also in case everything doesn't go smoothly).

What are your ideas?

Thanks in advance!

    Easy...just don't decorate it.

You aren't supposed to decorate in new builds for over 6 months anyway so no one would find it strange.

Our spare room is intended to be a nursery but until then its plain magnolia walls with a spare bed. No one will question it!
  • If you paint it a neutral colour or a hint of lemon you can (when baby comes along) use a colourful wall frieze or banners etc to decorate it. murals as well.

The joy of decorating a nursery is more than the walls which need to be changed as children grow anyway.

Google hand crafts for nursery and look at all the pictures for inspiration

So you think I should buy a cheap bed?

That's a good idea about the murals.

As I mentioned, it's about furniture as well (not just walls). I think I'll go for a neutral colour and add adhesive wall decor when the baby is on its way.

    Thanks

if you don't want to use it as a spare room, theres no need to buy a bed for it. But if you have the space for it in that room, even when you've converted it to a nursery, you might want to consider a futon or chairbed? That way it can still be a useful room until you put nursery furniture in it, and the chairbed/futon can stay where it is even when its a nursery?

I wouldn't touch it and take joy in filling it up when baby is on the way. A lovely blank canvas. I'd take that a million times over our situation of selling and chucking out five years worth of my husband's sh*t, sorry collection (hoard) out of our nursery to be. We are still TTC but there's no chance in hell he would have sorted it if we started when it was en route!

Thank aileth. I agree, it will give us something to enjoy together!
  • Neutral colours, maybe a couple of shelves or a bookcase (which can then be used for baby). If you want to avoid any possible gossip about whether it will be a nursery, get a small desk from Freecycle and call it the study. That should avert anybody from wondering if you moved for an extra bedroom so that you can have a child, and you can freecycle the desk afterwards.

White walls and white ikea lack shelves, plain roller blind. Use as a study and then if a baby arrives, add decals and some pretty curtains.

Thanks - this was exactly the sort of thing I was thinking that I didn't want to happen. I will have to scour freecycle. Hopefully I can find something decent - I've given so much away on there recently!
