Or cheaper Golf 1.9 TDI. Might be marginally higher tax but lower price and less depreciation.

Where are you getting a golf 1.9TDI for less than a 1.4TDI Polo??

I was going to go for a golf but they were more expensive and also fuel economy is about 10mpg less.

However the 1.9TDI VW engine in fab and you will be able to run it into the ground!

    Autotrader? 2000 X reg Golf TDI, 136,000 miles £699.

    2000 X reg Polo TDI, 120,000 miles £1399

I was going to put a yr 2000 golf and compare it to a 2009 Polo :)

But smaller cars do tend to be advertised for more than bigger ones.

Been looking for something different and a few adverts catch my eys. But a Mondeo costs less than a Focus to buy.

  • The teething problem with the golf I have is the hard plastic right elbow rest (it's got a tiny bit of foam that has flattened now). Also the seats do not have adequate lower back support - it's soft and your lower back sinks into the backrest. It needs to be firm on the lowerback and extrude a little bit more than the upper portion.
Just stick one of these in - a Mesh Lower Back Support Thingy. Don't buy from that link - just the first one I saw after a search, but I picked up a few when they were ~£1.50 each in a supermarket. I've got one on my chair in the lab and one on my chair at my home desk, and you've just made me think that I should use one whenever I'm in a 10+-year-old car. I've 6'4 and used to have an occasional back twinge, but haven't since using these*.

I don't quite understand the "elbow rest" - are you driving one-handed?

    How tall are you?

*Anecdotal, no hard evidence, please do not read as a "fact" as it may be a coincidence.

This was my experience when looking too, I was looking 2007 or 2008, and the same garage had a polo and a golf, both diesel, similar mileage, at the gold was £4,800, the polo was £3,800.

Except your Polo Seller claims to be private yet has listed other cars for sale but in a different location?

And lots of private sellers think their cars are worth a fortune because they have seen a similar one on a dealers forecourt for the same money.

Do all VW owners sell Apple products on gumtree? Or just those 2 that you chose? :)

If you want more vfm with reliability, Honda civic trumps vw.

Newer car, less miles, same money, arguably more reliable

First one I see on ebay literally.

And I drive an audi... But recognise I'm paying more for a badge.

Cheap for a reason. At less than 3.5 years old it had a smash bad enough to make it CAT D.

The 2006 Golf doesn't have the same 1.9TDI engine as the previous MK4 Golf (pre 2004) as far as I know. So the reliability isn't the same as the PD 130 TDI.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

A 1.9TDI VW will hold it's value for years and will last a long long time!

That is why a 1.9TDI Golf will be dearer than a 1.4TDI Polo

  • Easy answer, if you are look for reliability steer clear of Vauxhall and Ford (for the 3k budget)

    I would go for a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI

Steer clear of the 2 litre models, 1.9 a bit more agricultural but the engines are bulletproof, one of the most reliable engines ever built!
