    I read something years ago about decreasing term insurance for this, and by the sound of a couple of replies above it would still be possible.

    The cost of the premiums could also presumably be made as a gift, from his income, but this might need checking if it's still true.

    How you deem the tax liability to be split between that and the rest of the estate, if he does not survive 7 more years, is probably one of the aspects where the expert advice comes in. Wills and deeds of variation might be others.
