    Debt-free and Proud!
I experimented with leaving it on and I don't like it. Trouble is my OH has got used to having it on all the time and keeps turning it up!

  • I have found that to heat my house from cold it uses around half a unit then if I leave it on for a few hrs after each time the boiler flicks into action to keep the heat to the desired temp, in my case 17c it uses a quarter of a unit which sort of proves to keep a house to a constant temp does use less energy each time the boiler fires than it does from cold, but I think it would still cost more obviously overall to have heating on 24/7 but in comparison to switching on from cold each time you do get more heat for longer time for less on constant heating.

You are right in what you say (it does take more energy to heat from cold), but the conclusions you draw from that are off.

No it wouldn't. If their modern house was 100% insulated (impossible) and never lost any of the heat produced, then it would cost NO MORE to leave the heating on 24/7. Never less. Basic thermodynamics.

What about, for the sake of argument, with the heating on all the time they found that they were comfortable with the thermostat 2 degrees lower?

Interestingly I was looking at the odd boiler brochure and new boilers are more efficient when running at a fraction of their full power output. Old boilers like mine are the opposite. This would suggest that now it was more sensible to run the boiler for longer when previously it might have been better to turn it off and use it at full blast for a shorter time.

How could that be? The comfortable temp is the comfortable temp, regardless. Most people want heating when they're in (except overnight), and set their programmers accordingly..
2C lower might well be 20% cheaper, but, once again, it's not comparing like with like. It will be cheaper, whether programmed or running 24/7.

All of the advice these days is don't oversize boilers.

The main factor to achieve optimum efficiency is to have the return water temperature low enough that the boiler operates in condensing mode.

It is perfectly reasonable (and usually done) to be happy with a lower temperature when on constantly.

    Yes, it messes up comparisons.

So you're always cold and still paying more for your gas? Right. That's what messes up comparisons!
