A question regarding back billing

I'm hoping for some help with a problem I have with Co-Op Energy.

I switched from them to Scottish Power in June 2013, and paid by direct debit.

On 19th December 2014, I received a final reminder for a bill in June 2013 so I telephoned them saying that this was the first I'd heard of it and the lady said she'd send it out. I received a copy of the bill on 23rd December 2014 and on 2nd January 2015 I get a threat of legal action for non payment.

I've managed to get out of them the following information:
The bill was sent via email (which I never received) and they've sent me a copy of a received mail from an incoming co-op account;
They said they could not change the amount of the direct debit because it was less than my normal monthly DD.
They also said that they could not explain why it had taken them until December 2014 to realise I hadn't paid.

Is this something that falls under the back billing?

Thank you.
In spite of the cost of living, it’s still popular :eek:
