What do we do when we get a new property?
Hi there
Just looking for quick advice as it's years since we've moved house and I can't remember what you do when you move in somewhere new.
We've just been given keys to our new place, but are still in our current flat for a couple of weeks' overlap. Just trying to get utilities etc registered in our name in the new place. We've been given the details of the current suppliers - Ebico (Southern Electric) for both gas & electricity. Do we just call them and register the property in our name, then give it a couple of months after we move in to see what our monthly bills/usage are like then do a comparison, or can we check we're on the best deal somehow right now?
Many thanks
Claire

They won't register accounts in your name until you own/rent the house- although I assume by 'getting the keys' that means it has happened.
You need to read both meters and phone* the details to Ebico - taking a photo might help if there are problems later.
Unless your consumption is very low, it is unlikely that Ebico will be the cheapest. I suggest you estimate your consumption and compare tariff prices on a comparison website.
* Also read water meter if fitted.0 -
Yes, notify Ebico of your occupation and the meter readings on the day you move in.
As soon as you receive their Welcome Pack you are free to Switch to another supplier
Both Gas & Electric currently with Ebico?
Ebico are unique in that they don't have a Daily Standing charge, but as their unit rates are high to make up for this, they only make sense as a supplier if you are a "Low User" of Gas or Electric, or both0 -
As said read all your meters (gas, water, leccy) and phone the info through to the suppliers to ensure you don't pay for consumption by the previous occupiers (or even builders if it's a new property) - do it now as you are responsible for the bills once you've got the keys. Take photo's as well. Make sure you save this info as it might become useful in the future.
Ebico probably aren't the cheapest so it's worth checking on comparison sites and swapping as soon as you can.
Make sure you get account numbers allocated to yo
Ideally you should read the meters yourself every month and send the info through to the suppliers, save the data (knock up a small spreadsheet).
Make sure that all bills accurately reflect your consumption. Any estimated bills should be corrected by phoning the meter readings through.
Check that your direct debit covers your consumption and that it's being taken from your bank account and correctly recorded on your bills.
Five minutes once a month can save hours of grief in the futureNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
