Double-glazing - how helpful for heat retention?

I have a conservatory that has poor windows and them god awful plastic sheeting in and was built in the 80's, I have two options take the windows out with the plastic roof or get rid of the lot and save myself bag loads of money and have a lovely patio already to use! Anyone done this?0
