Gearbox repair

Last Friday my ford focus 06, suddenly started making a whirring noise. Long story short, Green flag said it is the gear box. This has been verified by a transmissions garage today. The quote I have been given is £1,250 for a reconditioned gear box with 12 months guarantee . That's the worst case scenario. Minimum £450 to strip back the present gear box and diagnose actual problem, before doing anything else. At present the gears are changing fine. It is an automatic car. Is there a cheaper way of doing this ? Many thanks for any replies.

When did you last have the gearbox serviced?

Does it do it whilst parked or only when moving?

No idea when the gear box was last serviced. I have owned it for a short while but hadn't got around to it so haven't had this done. Only does it when moving and doesn't make a noise when I have my foot on the accelerator.

No noise with the engine running but when stopped with the lever in Drive or position 2 or R etc?

Get a 2nd opinion, Its maybe a CV joint or bearing issue.

I was quoted £1200 for fitting a recon gearbox to my Vectra, got it done at a place in Birmingham for £750, including a new clutch and slave cylinder.

Basically it's where all the local main dealerships take customers cars to have gearbox work done, then they just slap a few hundred £ on top. Dealerships don't do this sort of work for themselves, it's almost always outsourced to someone who has proper mechanics instead of diagnostics machine monkeys.
