New car tax rules - still need to leave 21 days?

Under the new car tax system, is it still necessary to leave 21 days from declaring SORN to re-taxing in order to get a refund?

I had to tax a car recently that had just been declared SORN. You can't tax a car online for 5 days from the date of SORN but you can do it over the phone with DVLA or at the post office.

According to DVLA if you tax the car over the phone, you can't pay by direct debit, but you can at the post office.
  • I SORN'd a car about two weeks ago and received confirmation from DVLA, the car showed as SORN'd on the DVLA enquiry website almost immediately. 36 hours later the new owner successfully taxed it online using the V5C/2.

That's odd considering DVLA told me that if you SORN a car online, their system puts a 'lock' on it for 5 days, during which time, it can only be taxed over the phone or at the post office.

I bought a car just over a week ago and the seller had SORN it online. I tried every day for a week to tax the car online and could only tax it on the 6th day.

Hmm. That's not what I experienced.

I SORN'd on the afternoon of 5th January, sold the car on the evening of the 6th, and the seller bank transferred the payment and then taxed it on my computer using the V5C/2 whilst I watched, then drove it away on the morning of the 7th.

Likely that the systems take so long to catch up the five day 'hold' takes five days to establish.
