As to currency exchange services: don't just blindly use one. Use a comparison sit such as https://www.fxcompared.com/ to find the best deal for a given sum of money on a given date.
The best offer on http://fxcompared.com is a whole £20 less than the best I could find today for £1k
I wouldn't take a comparison site for the last word in rates exchange either.
