I wonder if anyone can help me please
I am purchasing a new car tomorrow and have "transferred" my insurance from my current car to my new car.
I am transferring ownership of my old car to my son and Intend sending off the "log Book" to the DVLA to inform them of the change of owner
The car will not have any insurance and WILL not be driven for at least 2 weeks until we hear from the DVLA regarding a medical condition we have declared for my son.
Once we hear from the DVLA regarding my sons medical condition we will be purchasing insurance for him to drive the car.
Until we hear from the DVLA is it legal not to have insurance? The car will not be used and will locked in a garage
any help appreciated

It will need to be sorn to get round the continuous insurance rules.0

So do you recommend informing them of a change of owner (my son) and declaring SORN at the same time until the decision on the medical declaration is decided
The "old" car has only ever been insured in my name and my son has never had car insurance0 -
Your insurance wont be valid so it needs to be SORN. The issue regarding your sons licence etc is neither here or there.
Also when you transfer ownership or SORN it any tax will be refunded. You cannot transfer tax to another owner/keeper.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You don't need to notify change of ownership, only "keeper".
Why bother, if your son is at the same address? It's just one more owner on the V5 when you (or your son) come to sell it.0 -
As above. When you transfer the vehicle to your sons name on the V5, tax will be refunded to you and the vehicle will be then untaxed and in your sons name. You can't declare SORN (i don't think) because when the change of keeper is processed that's when it has to be declared.
As long as it's in a garage like you said, no insurance is fine. All your base are belong to us.0 -
I cannot transfer the vehicle to my son until we have the decision on a medical condition my son has
It looks like I should declare SORN ??0 -
In that case, you will need to declare SORN as it's uninsured. All your base are belong to us.0

In practice no need to sorn if the car is only uninsured for 2 weeks and remains off road.
When an uninsured car is flagged under the continuous insurance check you first get a warning letter and only if you continue to be uninsured after this is received does any penalty action get taken.
This all takes weeks.0 -
How long did you contact the DVLA about the medical condition?
Mrs' was submitted in October and still no sign of a decision - just wondered to ensure you are being realistic of how quick they are in making their decisions0
