Turkey - recommendations please!

Dear all

Looking at going away in the next month or so. Thinking about Turkey. Looking for warmth but I'm not keen on beach holidays. Would really like to see history / culture - maybe even biblical related. But all I see on websites are holiday resorts.

Any suggestions?

S

Hi S, no guarantees of warmth in Turkey in February unless Antalya is your thing? Maybe a flight to Izmir, book hotels and hire a car. Too many sites to list in easy driving range eg Pamukkale, Troy, Gallipoli, Ephesus and, of course, Izmir (ancient Smyrna) itself. The Turkish official Tourist website (goturkey.com/en) is a good resource.

I went on this holiday back in October and can thoroughly recommend it. Also Riviera tours is another company I can recommend although not been to Turkey with them I know they do it.

Both of these are guided, coach tours which IMO is the best way to see lots of cultural sites. Turkey is easy to get around in that they have a good bus network but personally I wouldn't drive there. And, while English is widely spoken in tourist areas it's not so when you're a bit off the beaten track.

If you want warmth then I don't think February is the best time to go but it could be mildish.
  • Having lived in Turkey I always associate January/February as their winter.
It can be fine but is often rainy
