Hi!
I need to pay the gas and elec for a property but I can't do it until the new people have registered.
Until then, I just wanted a rough idea of how much I owed.
Meter read on 2 Jan - Elec 18983
Meter read on 12 Jan - Elec 27228
Gas-2 Jan - 01030.830
Gas - 12 Jan - 01031.394
Difference for elec is 8245. This seems like a big difference for 10 days - am I wrong? If cost per kWh is 20p (excl standing charge) this works out to a lot...! Am I doing it wrong?
Thanks in advance for assistance and sorry if I'm being thick.

for electric it is as simple as
8245 x 0.2 = £1649
Yes, this is a lot, but it assumes that the meter readings taken on the 2 Jan (and the 12th) are correct and not an estimate. If all the meter readings on and prior to the 2nd Jan have been estimated then you (or whoever) has been vastly underpaying and building up a huge debt. You need to look for the last confirmed reading. Also double check the latest reading.
With regards to gas, you have to convert the units to kwh. Assumine it is a modern m3 meter. A rough calculation is as follows:
1 x 11.2 = 11.2kwh
11.2 x (gas cost) say 4.5p = 50p
Your electric unit rate is very high, 20p?!! Are you on a meter?
Anyway, I would advise going back through you bills to look for the last confirmed reading. Is the reading on the 12 Jan the most recent confirmed one? Do you have an opening reading for when you moved in and set up the account?0 -
Thank you. I think it's closer to 16p but I wanted to be conservative.
I'm basing this all on a reading which was given to me by the agents and I now suspect it is very wrong, since in April last year the meter read 26155, the difference to 27228 seems far more likely than a meter going backwards.
I only hope the agents took a photo.0 -
If you have that April reading on a bill, then yes it looks like that 2nd Jan reading is very wrong. Is the April reading confirmed and not estimated?
Do you use much electric?
Based on your April reading and the latest January reading, it looks like you have only used only 1077KWH in that time. This in itself is very low usage. If we assume the reading was taken on the 12th April and the latest reading was on the 12th Jan, that is an average of around 4kwh per day, which is very low.
This is why, if you are renting you should always get and confirm an opening and closing readings yourself.
However, it is the 2nd Jan reading that looks like it is very wrong.0 -
I have photo of April 2014 and 12 Jan readings...have asked for photo of 2 Jan. It is quite an eco dwelling, that is why the 2 Jan reading blew me away.
Lesson learned is to always take own photos, not rely on agents.0 -

What you want is '£0.20' or '20p'.0 -
I have removed the offending "p" even though I am pretty sure everybody understood what was implied.0

Hi - this thread can close (if that's something that happens here!)
The agent agreed the 2 Jan reading was wrong somehow.0
