I know that the American system is NTSC and our's is PAL but I am unsure if a conversion is possible.
Can anyone help?

Conversion is possible but why would you want to do this? In many cases conversion is not required as the playback apparatus is multi-standard.

Depends on the VCR and TV. Many of the VCR's which support NTSC output using the NTSC as PAL60 i.e. using 60Hz instead of the usual 50Hz. Therefore the TV needs to support PAL60.
