AMEX card took payment twice!!

in Credit cards
Hi All,
At the beginning of January I used my American Express card to pay for a holiday which cost about £2000. I came close to my credit limit and instead of going over it and paying a fee I just called up and paid it all off on the 7th.
Since then I've rarely used my card and today, which is normally when AMEX debit my account they took another £2000. Even though I've already paid that off. I checked my AMEX account and normally my credit limit of being £2500 its now go up to just over £5000 which shows I've over paid my account.
I phoned them and they said because I had a direct debit set up they just took the money even though I had already paid for it. It just automatically takes what they think is owed and I would have to go to my bank to sort it out, which is now charging me for being so far over my limit.
All of this put my debit account into about £1800 in debt and I had to transfer some money (which cost me to do) from my savings account to clear that debt. I only found out about this problem when I tried to pay for petrol and to see my card get declined.
Just wondering what my options are to claim some money back from AMEX after all the problems they have caused?

None, if their terms outline how direct debits work in conjunction with manual payments.
You can ask them to send you a cheque for the overpayment, but it may be as easy to just spend it, depending on your cashflow and how long that may take.0
