What if you have a 0% and life of balance on same account?

I have an MBNA card with balance on a low % for life of balance. I also have an offer on that account for 0% off balance transfers. I'm just wondering how I would avoid getting charged at a standard (high) rate of interest if I were to use that 0% offer. Presumably any payments I would make during that 0% period would first be taken off the low % rate as the higher % of the two rates? So I would need to wait until the day they start charging interest on the 0% balance before paying it off in order for that part of the balance to be paid off? Am I correct, if you have managed to follow what I'm saying?!
