Damaged engagement ring, brought online

Hello All
This may be a bit pre-emptive as I've only just put the ring in the post to be returned, but I'm stressing out already!
I ordered an engagement ring online as I couldn't find anything I wanted in a store (and it was a ruby one, so hard to find in regular shops), and it was delivered today with a small crack on the face.
I've spoken to someone from the company (who have very good reviews online, didn't see any negative feedback when I researched them) and have sent it back for them to have a look at it. What I'm really worried about is though, is what if they just say I dropped it and refuse to do anything!?
They get it tomorrow, but if I need to argue with them about it, or if they deny it and just send it back, what should I do/say? I paid with a credit card, so would it be covered under Section 75 if everything went wrong? If they just say that I damaged it myself, how would I even prove that I didn't?
Its the most expensive single item (excepting a car) I've ever brought, and if I needed to go out and buy another one, I don't know what I'd do. I hope it all goes well when they look at it, but I'm just expecting the worst as usual

Hello All
(and it was a ruby one, so hard to find in regular shops), and it was delivered today with a small crack on the face.
Of the ruby? That isnt a crack, it is a flaw and you cannot do that by dropping it...unless it is glass....
Ruby has almost the same hardness as diamond. On the other hand, it might just be possible to crack a garnet, but then, they would be guilty of fraud since you bought a ruby.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it
Meet my best friend : YNAB (you need a budget)

It's up to them to prove that the damage was caused by you rather than having been damaged before posting or in the post. Unless they have the most rigorous quality control processes and send it in a bomb proof box then its 99.9% likely that they will just send a replacement.
Rubies are a little brittle despite being very hard so a crack isnt an impossibility. Thankfully they arent the most expensive stone to replace if you buy them from the right places.0 -

I don't think this is accurate.
Diamonds are 10 on the Mohs scale and rubies (corundums, same as sapphires) are 9 but apparently that difference is significant:
http://chemistry.about.com/od/geochemistry/a/mohsscale.htmAs an example, diamond (10) is about 4-5 times harder than corundum (9)0 -
Thanks everyone, you've made me feel slightly better, I guess I was just panicking too much! I've just had bad luck in the past with similar situations, although they were all minor purchases.
I'll update when I find out what happens!0 -
So it turns out i'm just a worrier. Thanks everyone for reading, its all being fixed no problem

Just have to get her to say yes now!0 -
Glad it's being sorted.
Hope she likes the ring.0
