Question on hearth for gas fire

I need to get a hearth so at I can have my gas fire installed but not sure which is the best option financially.
The chimney breast has a "surround" which is actually part of the wall IYKWIM. The gap between each side of the surround is 900mm - would it look odd to have a hearth that just goes in the middle of this gap or do people usually cut into the surround or under it and have a hearth that is wider than the surround? Ive only ever seen the latter and don't want it to look strange but also keeping an eye on the pennies!
I've found a company nearby that will cut a piece of slate to fit into the gap but I'm now wondering if it will look strange?
The other option is to use paving slabs which is a bit 70s so would rather not go down that route!
Help please sorry I can't post pics or attachments so hope I've explained this well enough!

Firstly, in order to give you some advice, could you give the following info.
Make and model of the fire
the width between the two legs of your surround ( the internal width)
The height of the internal part of the surround, from the floor to the underneath of the mantelpiece.
What is the ''surround'' made of.
If you can give the above, then I can give you some advice. It is a pity you cannot give a picture, could you post it elsewhere and put a link to it?0
