in Energy
Hi,
We completed on our house in July (having got married in June) and I spent many hours on the phone to the energy companies trying to find the best deal for us. Eventually we signed up to SSE.
A few days later we received two letters from them (one for elec, one for gas), confirming they would be taking X per month by direct debit.
We had a note pushed through the door by a meter-reader saying that he'd missed us. Finally, I got round to giving them a meter reading yesterday. I tried to do it online but it wouldn't let me log in.
So I called SSE and after listening to b***** Frank Sinatra for half an hour, I was told that our account "hadn't been set up properly", because the previous owners "hadn't closed their account properly". Now, having received the letters mentioned above, I had assumed that they were taking money from our account. Furthermore we have SSE boiled cover, so SSE does appear on the statement. Stupid me, I only check my bank statements to see if there's anything that shouldn't be on there, rather than what should be on there. So I discovered that we haven't actually paid for our gas or electricity for six months.
Now I'm expecting a call back from them this afternoon. I feel this was completely their cockup, but do I have a leg to stand on? Bearing in mind they've not made any attempts to contact us in the last six months, despite continuing to supply us with gas and electricity...
I was so pleased to get away from NPower, who supplied us at our last flat, but I'm starting to think they're all the sane.
Thanks in advance.

No it isn't completely theirs and no you do not have a leg to stand on.
I trust you kept a copy of your opening reads?
It is probably best to pay the six months in one go - that'll be easier than having a whole extra winter's arrears bumping up future debits for months. Alternatively you can spread the repayments.0 -

Surely it is their cockup though? Do you not think I may be able to get a discount?
I don't think I still have meter readings. I certainly gave them to them the day we moved in.0 -

Who was the supplier when you bought the property? If it wasn't SSE, then you owe them money and probably has something to do with the account set up not taking place efficiently.0 -
If they haven't been taking the money then it should still be sitting there in your bank account - six months at about £100 month = about £600.
Surely you would have noticed all that extra money in there so it shouldn't be a problem when the bill comes in as you should still have the money to pay it or am I missing something?Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
