But the average in the UK is 100-110 a month, and that is with spreading the payments

I think the OP is spending that amount on Gas alone - I thought the average gas & electricity bill was just over £100/month combined.
  • that is EXACTLY what i'm saying!

I thought the same too :-)

You have a draughty old house, and an old non-condensing boiler, plus a Pre-payment meter. A classic fixer-upper.

Nothing a £50,000 make-over won't fix. Call up these TV shows, and cry a lot. Borrow a baby if you haven't got one. No one will throw you in prison for fraud, they just want good TV.

Say she uses £40 per month electric and £60 gas on average per month.

    £60 * 12 months = £720

    BUT.....

OP is on a prepay meter so her spend could break down something like this....

    Jan £170
    Feb £120
    Mar £90
    Apr £40
    May £0
    Jun £0
    July £0
    Aug £0
    Sep £0
    Oct £50
    Nov £100
    Dec £150
    TOTAL £720

If she had moved in June she wouldn't be wondering why the gas was so cheap!

A decent digital programmer/stat costs from about £60. Get that installed as a priority and then sort out the insulation. At present the system is only controlled by the timer, which is very wasteful.
A PPM costs the same as Standard tariff, so you are paying maybe 7% more than the cheapest online discount tariff.
Presumably the reason you can't get any more credit is because you have already overextended your credit line with the mortgage and other new household bills.
What did you budget for a dual fuel account annually? Even with the recent price cuts, £1250pa is fairly typical for the UK, and much more for a draughty 4 b/r property with poor insulation.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
