Hi All
Inspired by Slowdowns not buying it thread and trying to keep from purchasing excess items I was wondering which way people find shopping the best-Daily or Weekly? Picking up only what they need when they need it or 1 big shop weekly?
Having tried both I found they weekly I was buying too much and daily I was buying to much random YS stuff.
I work beside an Ald1 and a L1dil and pass the "branded" supermarkets in the way home.
Also if anyone has any ideas for storing meat, fruit&Veg etc as it may go off sitting in the car.(Freezer type bag/box) We have no storage at
work.
Thank You!

NOT BUYING IT 2018!
Consumerism is.....buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know and probably wouldn't like even if you did know them.

Hi, I work on the basis that the more times I go into a supermarket the more I spend. I am just not disciplined enough to pick up the one or two things that I need and nothing more.
I mealplan, make a list and shop once a week. If I run out of something (unless its milk) I try really hard to wait until my designated shopping day.
As for cold storage, I dont bother as I go straight home from the supermarket which only takes me 15 or 20 minutes.0 -
A bit of both.
I get my meat monthly from the butchers. It costs about £45 to fill my freezer to bursting.
Then I spend about £50 a week in Aldi. But sometimes I will try and leave it a fortnight if I can get by on what I already have in the house.0 -
I shop weekly for the basics. but I buy fresh bread and milk - not daily but every couple of days.0

If I shop daily I end up with lots of duplicates and !!!! I wasn't intending to buy; I don't get that if I shop weekly but even with a meal plan I still find I have an inordinate amount of waste with trying to estimate use for week vs life of product.
In practice I do a big shop once a month at the butcher and one of the big four, then a weekly (sometimes twice weekly) between aldi, market and Wilkos. I also do a quarterly shop at makro. It's not ideal but it's the best I have got to!

I can't walk into a shop and come out with one thing so I go weekly after doing my food plan for the week then unless its milk which hubby gets he has more control than me we do without until my next shop. I do stock up when I see a good offer though.February GC £261.97/24 NSDS 10/12

Visit the supermarket usually twice a week....on a Tuesday I take my Mum shopping and pick up all the groceries for the week. Then I make a second trip with DS2 to pick up all the stuff that makes the trolley to heavy for me to push such as beers, bottled water, wine and such.
The one rule is if it isn't on the list then it does not go in the trolley!!
I'm a weekly shopper and never buy anything in between unless we (almost never) run out of milk. I do a meal plan and shopping list to match and stick to that when I go shopping.
Elasticmoney, I'm not sure how long it is since you last shopped in Aldi. I used to do a circular trip to Aldi and call in toSainsbury's on the way back for the top-ups. Over the past year what I need in Sainsbury's has got less and less. This week, for example, nothing at all. Aldi has increased their range.0 -
Morning - have not been in a SM since Dec 31st and am challenging myself to stay out of them throughout 2015. My routine has changed to doing a rough meal plan from cupboards and freezer on Friday, do shopping list and visit market, butcher etc on Saturday and any top ups at the Tuesday market. So far so good and this is from a previously avid SM shopper with a YS habit!
Have to confess to having a good store cupboard and snaffled some good meat bargains pre xmas so this may change but honestly have not missed the SM's and time spent shopping has decreased to a couple of hours a week.
Re storage - I have one of the SM shopping bags with foil lining and velcro fastener? It's fairly roomy has penguins on and have no idea where I bought it! Think it was sainsbugs - could you put couple of ice packs in although have never had any problems with stuff being warm when kept in the boot.January 2020 Grocery challenge £119.45/£200

Hi All
Thank you for your replies
I suppose my reasoning for looking at the best way for shopping is that
1)Myself and OH never have a day off together due to work(this is changing this year-at last!)
2) 2 LO's age 4 and 2.5.Getting hard to do a shop with them in tow.
3) People seem to get a lot of YS Bargains by going in daily.
I do stick to a meal plan but like to have about 10-12 meals that we can vary it up a little bit and maximise special offersNOT BUYING IT 2018!

We make a list based on what we have in and what we can do with it, then go to Mr T first thing Saturday morning (like 7/8 AM first thing because they've restocked the night before but it's deadly quiet) and get everything. There might be one extra trip in the week for milk and bread but that's about it.
We are thinking about moving to online shopping though as we don't drive so are currently limited to what we can carry home, but again that would probably be done once a week or every 10 days with a top-up shop in between if needed."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
We don't even go weekly really. We do a big "cupboard shop" fortnightly (or maybe even less) - so buying tins (for us, we eat a lot of beans as no meat), grains, loo roll, cereal etc. That'll come from whichever of the supermarkets is most convenient at the time.
Then we'll buy fruit and veg as needed from the greengrocers - usually weekly, but we got an enormous veg box this week that'll do a week and a half, or perhaps two.
Then we might buy little bits in between - like veggie sausages, milk, snacks to have with curries, and odd little bits that we might just run out of.
We did used to shop weekly but found we just ended up stockpiling stuff, or buying for the sake of it. This seems to be working much better for us at present (although we may need a bit more routine once babyavocado is born in May!).0
