recommendation of online guide to saving Windows 7 backup

I tried to do the above when I first got my laptop. I bought a high capacity USB but the laptop rejected it with an incompatibility message which I didn't understand and couldn't find an answer. I want to try again after having had some problems with the laptop this week. I note that the key answer to a slowish laptop seems to be "reinstall Windows".
Would someone just refer me to a good online guide? Can I save to a USB or not? Or can i save to DVD disks? If so which type? I don't want to waste money on buying ones which aren't suitable (as I did with the USB). I want to improve my laptop before it crashes. I don't want to have to buy one with Windows 8.
NB. I have saved my documents/photos etc. to an external hard drive.
Thanks in anticipation

The easiest form of backup these days is to use software such as AOMEI's Backupper
http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html
To take a in my case a monthly system image of the hard disk. By doing this you are essentially saving the entire contents of your hard disk as it exists at the time you do the backup. If you need to reinstall your harddisk due to its failure or because of viruses and malware you can restore everything in about 15-20 minutes back to a fully functioning system that negates the need for you to download a hundred or more windows updates and reinstall programs.
As part of the backup process you will create a restore dvd or usb that you boot your computer from. Through that you find the image file usually saved to an external hard drive and then in restores everything back to how it was. It actually sounds more complicated than it is. Read the help files on the AOMEI site and watch the videos and you'll understand the process very quickly.0
