Too many named drivers on policy
My daughter (21) is learning to drive and is a named driver on my policy. My son (19)
:(passed his test 18 months ago and is a named driver on my policy. Both are students living away from home. My husband who has his own car is also a named driver on my policy. My problem is I have twins who turn 17 next month and desperate to learn to drive. I contacted my insurer Diamond ( who gave me a very good price last year and the renewal quote I just received is very good too £720) but they said the max number of names on a policy is 4. My son wants to drive when he is home from uni and I don't want to take my husband off the policy as I don't fancy teaching 3 to drive on my own. Husband's car is not suitable for learning to drive. Anyone got any suggestions on what to do ? Thanks.

If only it were that easy! I spent an afternoon trying others and seems the limit is 4 from the ones I tried. When I phoned places they couldn't tell me on the phone and said have to go through the quotes online and see if any underwriters gave a price for it. I was getting quotes double my existing renewal even when just quoting like for like. I was hoping for a reply from this forum from someone who knew more about car insurance than me and what were other options to try, eg separate learning insurance for twins only if possible? An additional policy ?0

Why is your husbands car not suitable to learn to drive in
I learned in a mixture of tiny cars and big ones.
Most things are in the same place.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Try a decent local broker.
Or you can insure the learners separately at https://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/0 -
Check your husband's policy, it might have driving other cars cover. It will be on TP basis only but if this suits then that's one space freed up0

Thanks for all the replies. My husband drives an Volvo Xc90 which really is not a car for learning to drive in, foot brake instead of hand break, plus feels like driving a truck to me! I'll get my husband to check his policy and see if he can instruct on a Tp basis on his. I'll also look into sep insurance for twins , as think may have to do that. Just hope not too expensive!0

If your husband only ever supervises rather than driving, then he doesn't need to be insured to drive the vehicle.
That might be the easy answer.0 -
It does mean though that if the driver doesn't want to proceed he can't then drive the car home.Check your husband's policy, it might have driving other cars cover. It will be on TP basis only but if this suits then that's one space freed up
It'll almost definitely exclude 3rd party coverage on a partners car.0 -

It might be, but it's a wrong answer that leaves the husband open to prosecution. The supervisor HAS to be legal to drive the car.
According to the Motor Vehicle (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999, the supervising driver is qualified if he (a) is 21 or over (b) holds a relevant licence and (c) has the relevant driving experience.
Under what law would the husband be prosecuted?
