Slow laptop

I have been having a problem with my laptop running very slowly. The internet gets not responding in both IE and Firefox, sometimes with a script taking a long time to run warning. Cursor also stops moving and it also affects word/excel.
I looked on other threads here and have run malwarebytes, adw and cc cleaner and it still happens.
Laptop is a Lenovo thinkpad E520 running windows 7 and if I try to close down I always get a message saying background programs are running do I want to force closure, and I am wondering if there is something in the background that is causing it as I have run out of ideas? Task manager sometimes has it at over 80% cpu and then it can drop to 20% without me doing anything at all.
I use it for internet (not fussy if its IE or Firefox), Word, Excel, and Photoshop obviously not all together.

Run the command "msconfig" and look in "start up".
It could be you are starting up a lot of unwanted programs.
If you can provide a list - take a screenshot or something showing just the start up dialog.

Clear the browser cache and try.

Is it slow offline as well?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Thank you both,

Yes it does get slow offline as well, but not as often.

I have got 2 snips that cover it, I am confused as they all have disabled dates beside them so adjusted the colums so that you could see them. Pictures are coming up as crosses, so I have put links in to them instead and hope they work.

Is everything checked in the startup?
Things like CCleaner, GoogleToolbar you can do without IMHO.
If you do not use bluetooth - then uncheck that too.
Don't think you need powerreg enabled either.

Google Toolbar - uninstal from program in Contorl panel
CC cleaner - if there is a tray icon and its doing active monitoring - disable active monitoring.

uncheck all the above 4 from startup and try.

If it's just when you're browsing the web that the slowness is most noticable, it might be due to something in your browser profile.

If you open a command prompt and type "firefox -p" you should see the Firefox profile manager. Create a new profile and see if that makes any difference. If it does, you can copy your bookmarks and add-ons to the new profile; if not just delete the new profile after testing.

Thank you, there are no ticks in any of the boxes in the startup pane and it looks as if they are all disabled as the only option I have is to enable them (disable is greyed out), I do use the google toolbar for translations so need to keep that :(
Will take the active monitoring off cc cleaner and see if it helps.

Thank you, I did set up a new profile on firefox as I found something about it from a search, and sadly it made no difference.

I doubt it'll make any difference, but if you only use the Google Toolbar for translations, you could install one of the Google Translate add-ons instead:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-translator-for-firefox/

I think the next things to rule out would be your Internet/wifi connection and software problems...

You could try booting from a live CD to see how your PC behaves online. Live CDs might take a while to boot, and the OS will perform more slowly than a hard-disk installation, but once the browser has opened and started, online performance shouldn't be affected much.

    Maybe give this a go:
    https://www.slax.org/

If it seems okay, perhaps some anti-malware software on your Windows installation is causing the slow-down by scanning web links or scripts. You could try disabling live protection and briefly check some TRUSTED(!) websites to see if that helps.

Otherwise, if network performance is poor with Slax, does it help is you use a network cable (instead of wifi)? Or try a different PC on the network?

Have you run a speed test to see what speeds you "should" be getting?

    Looks like everything is disabled.

You might want to enable "Microsoft Security Client". That's part of Microsoft Security Essentials (their free antivirus).
  • Run CC Cleaner, in both the main cleaner, and registry cleaner.

CC Cleaner also allows you to quickly and easily disable items at startup.

Personally, I don't run Garmin Express from startup, preferring to start it manually, when I actually need it.

Likewise, I seldom use the webcam, so I've turned that off.

Also turned off is Amazon Music Services.
