When buying a house is it normal too....

  • Oh yes, I certainly check out RightMove still regularly. Partly to compare the house I have with others in this area. Partly to keep an eye on property for "this stage of my life" (ie top of housing ladder age) back in Home Area just in case....(ie in case of a Premium Bond win or the like).

Top of housing ladder house I bought here = £160k I would think (now I've modernised it). Top of housing ladder house there = £300-£350k in "my" areas there:(:(

My advise would be to stop second guessing yourself it is a waste of your energy. Then get over to the mortgage free wanabees. Then after saving 6 months expenditure start overpaying whilst still having a life. Why not try living on just one income and when ready save that horrendous insurance payment (only when it makes sense to by the way). Have you got a mortgage which will allow you to recall overpayments in time of need?

Above are things which may set your mind at rest. Believe me there is nothing quite like the feeling that the roof over your head is all yours.

ETA There are some of us who were born worrying. If we have nothing to worry about then we worry about the fact that we must have missed something that we should be worrying about. Put it another way - time to find something productive to worry about.

I am so glad i posted this morning. This conversation has helped me to feel more normal...thanks all!

By the way, yes i do still look! I thought i was being naughty doing it, but i have spent the last three years looking to buy and viewing the property pages weekly as become a habit now.

I do agree, the stress of renting is much higher than it need be. The slightest problem and i am gearing up for a fight to keep my deposit. I absolutely insisted from the start that all communication was letter only. That way there will be no squabbles about getting my rather large deposit back. Then again thats just another worry!! Its just not safe i know.

I also now feel like i have tempted fate by vocalising this...will this now jinx a positive decision this week.

I can be mighty hard being so analytical!! LOL

You will do lots of worrying, this is normal. I went from selling a flat I bought for 94k to buying a house for £250k..... I remember lying awake one night being really worried about the level of debt. Been in the house a year now. Best decision I have ever made.

It's normal. Once you've agreed to buy you then also suspect that the house is a dud, the owner's moving because there's a big problem, it's falling down, the neighbours are bad, the area's bad, if you'd waited you could have done better..... all perfectly normal.

It's also normal to break down on the floor and cry right after you've let yourself in for the first time and to feel doom and gloom for hours afterwards.

Then, for months it takes time to adjust to that feeling of "OK .... that wasn't so bad after all was it".

I also feared every trick in the book being pulled out of the bag re my rental deposit - and I got the whole lot back, in full, no quibbles, it just turned up.

The whole "its going to be a dud" is also a niggling issue in the head, i wont lie. Actually i would say PasturesNew might have hit the nail on the head!

We have been married for many many years and have on the whole lived in new/relatively new houses. The one we want to buy is not new and was built in the 80's. This is a massive thing for us. But looking at the new house's though i love the cleanness, i was really put off by the room sizes, plot sizes. On top of that this house were in, is relatively new and if i owned it, i would be massively disappointed. One window doesn't close properly, the bathroom leaks through the living room ceiling and we found an exposed sewage pipe!! Yep, the agent, and the home owner did know before we moved in, and waited for us to find out. Crazy!!

Our hope is that this older house has been through its teen years, and now has matured into a lovely house (who just needs a make over, and a wee nip and tuck!)
