Another weird culprit can be soap. My mother had a habit of flushing the last bit of soap from each bar, and over a number of years it reacted with either the hard water, the bleach she squirted down there, or both, and formed a concrete-like substance.

A different bloke from the same company has come back and says it's just general blockage again, says he's disappointed the first one didn't recommend a 'camera survey'

The reason the second bloke was disappointed that the first guy hadn't recommended a "camera survey" is because they would have been able to charge you a fortune for doing so.
A camera survey involves a camera being put into the drains allowing the operator to view the inside of the drains to check for any damage to the drains or blockages further along from the drain cover, without having to dig up all of the pipework.
  • It's all sorted now, the same company came back, was an older guy who trained the one who came before, I don't think he thought he'd really finished the job properly so he has cleared it for free.

if it happens again I'll definitely call Thames Water though, even if it turned out to be in my bit of the pipe it's only £70 and if it's beyond that it's free

Aha ok well I probably won't be spending more money on that then.
