Greek Islands

Thinking about Greece for a week or so holiday in Mid May. Couple with an infant. Was thinking about Zante, Crete, Kos or Rhodes.

Just wondering what anyone with a young families personal thoughts are of the different islands.

We were thinking of Zante where showreel bay is, but ideally would like a sand beach area. We also like to get out and see some sites, beautiful places really rather than water sports.

Any personal experiences would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

If you go to Zante you must go on the land train ( hope it's still running ) in the day it's great at night it takes you up to owner of the trains big house with meal and entertainment strongly recommend.

If you want warmth at that time of the year consider southern Crete or islands near to Turkey.

I like all 4 islands (we don't have a young family though).

Which resorts were you thinking of on each island? Crete is a large island with 2 airports - Chania & Heraklion.

I've never heard of showreel bay on Zante.

I agree with richardw about location.
Zante is North West Greece (although it's the most southerly of the Ionian Islands).

Crete is the most southerly of the islands, both Kos & Rhodes are quite far south and to the east.

We go to North West Crete in mid May and it can rain at times.

Crete is great and with a young family Elounda, Sissi, Ag Nik, & Hersonnisos are all nice although Elounda is my preference. Have been to (NW crete most recently) and always have good weather in May - its a great time

Another crete vote here! I like Stalis at the eastern end of the island. There are good, reliable buses and plenty to see and do, there are a couple of water parks and a sandy beach

One thing to watch for there though is that it's next to malia, which doesn't in itself cause any problems but at the height of the season can overspill. I've been there several times and never seen any trouble. I've always seen young families there

Another vote for Stalis here - we go first week in May and it is lovely and quiet. Very good for families and nice and safe at night.

Beach is brilliant for small kids as it is sandy and the sea slopes gently out for what seems like miles. You can be knee deep one moment then 5 yards further out you will be ankle deep again.

  • Pefkos in Rhodes is great for families - loads of hotels and restarants with soft play areas

The 3 villages behind Hersonissos are really lovely :

Loads of great restaurants, bars etc...then down the (quite a hill but worth it) to more lively Hersonissos.
