I've been offered a job in retail, but I'm kind of fed up with retail work.

I understand everyone has to start somewhere, but employers seem very unmovable in regards to an employee's work experience, so gaining experience in a certain job is tough because no one will employ you if you've no experience. It is frustrating when you know you have the ability for the job.
Why don't you get a job in WH Smiths or somewhere similar?
It might still be retail, but they sell loads of stationery so you could spend the downtime creating your own little office in a quiet corner of the shop. You could phone whoever it is that answers the phone and build up your office experience gradually. You could also gain some experience on how to lay out your desk, which you could add to your CV.0 -

If you manage to get an office job, come back in a year and tell us if you still think that. I'm pretty sure that you won't.
I've worked in retail and office jobs, and both can be tedious. That's life I'm afraid, the bills have to paid.0 -
Remind us how long you've been volunteering for, and how many hours a week? What have you done to make things more interesting, apart from chase unfortunate unsuspecting women?0

Well done on getting the job offer.0 -
Congratulations on the job offer. I'd definitely take the job if I were you - better to be in work than out of it, both financially and from a self worth aspect. You'll be in a better position to decide what you want to do long term.

I don't think you're a WUM. Mainly because I have no idea what a WUM is.:)All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I'm getting on a bit and have worked in many different environments, Catering, factory, warehouse, driving, selling and at present a call center.
The one thing that they all have in common is they all become tedious after time. I should imagine even a glamorous job like an airline pilot becomes tedious.
The grass always looks greener on the other side. It rarely is.0 -

True. However, if one is working in a job that becomes to easy, then one can become comfortable. I don't want to be comfortable in a job and for it to be so simple that I could do it my eyes closed.
It is always good to have a challenge. Because of my qualifications and experience, I'm usually limited to certain types of jobs, and these are jobs I can do with ease because they are not challenging for me.
The initial stage of he job is getting used to everything, but once I'm used to it and comfortable, it becomes simple. I am sure many of you feel the same when you get comfortable in a job, but how do you keep it exciting/interesting?0 -
Take the job.
Are you claiming JSA if you are, you have no choice you have to take a job if you are offered one otherwise you will be sanctioned (i don't agree with alot of the JSA rules but this one I think is fair, people who are claiming benefits can't just refuse a job because they don't want it). Once you are working you will find it much easier to find another job, one which you are happy with, you will hopefully find once you start you like this one.
I have to be honest and say I think you are right if all your experience is in retail you will struggle to get an office job. Unfortunately the way the job market is at present employers can be picky and will discount anyone who doesn't have the relevant experience. It works the other way round as well, I work in an office and when I was out of work I applied for loads of retail jobs and never got anywhere as I didn't have experience.0
