Question re insurance

Hi Everyone,

I have bought a new car and it's all good. However there is a well known issue with the 2.5 litre engine and the fix is generally to have a part forged engine rebuild.

I am toying with the idea so I don't get the infamous ring land failure.

However, where do I stand with insurance. It isn't a blueprinted engine, but using forged pistons and crank. Most comparison sites don't differentiate. Would it really affect the price that much ?

  • If you are talking about an engine modification you ring the insurance company and declare it.

Why does a ring or piston failure require a new crank never mind a forged one.

If you use an owners club scheme they will know about the issue and the premium maybe no different.

I don't expect the insurers are going to pull an engine apart and say 'hmm that crank looks like its been changed' are they??

It's not a modification, but a repair with non-original spec parts. The aim is not to increase performance, but to increase longevity.

Under the strict writing of your policy you should inform them of the changes, but if you didn't i don't know how they'd ever find out.

As it increases durability of the engine, rather than it's performance it's similar to fitted different branded tyres on a car. Technically, it's different from standard but insurance wouldn't know / care
