Does anyone know if there is some sort of substation map showing you locations of substations in a certain area?

I'm sure the power distributor will have many, but I doubt if they will be willing to share them with you, unless there's a specific problem with one. I know BT Openreach have their own maps and I've seen the same sort of thing with Western Power..
If people want to avoid sub-stations they're usually quite easy to spot, especially in the country, where they stick them on poles. There, persuading someone else to have the transformer might be tricky.0 -
The larger scale Ordnance Survey maps have them marked.0

Your local distribution company will supply them to you. For example, if your are in Western Power Distribution's area the details are on this page:
