Which energy company are we with?!?

This probably a bit strange but hoping for some advise.
Background - S & P were renting a flat together. They really didn't get on so and had a big falling out after around 6 month I replaced P on 6th December 2014 (All organised properly through the lettings agency).
The electricity bill was just in P's names (there's no gas) so on the weekend of 6th S phones Scottish Power to give the meter reading and told them we are the new residents etc.
We hadn't receive any correspondence so S called Scottish Power today and they don't have any record of this call and are saying we aren't even with them?!
S was told the electricity was moved to Ovo in October. S didn't know anything about this and it seems odd as P already wanted to move out by this time so why bother changing provider...?
S called Ovo and they don't have any record of our address or meter 'serial number' but they will double check & come back to us about this.
Also -
S says letters/bills were being received from Scottish Power until December time in P's name.
S wrote the reading down in December but doesn't know where this is now but will try and find it (if poss).
No letters have been received addressed to us or P to do with the electricity (well any letters for P).
There aren't any letters in the flat from any energy provider so we don't know account number etc.
P wouldn't cooperate if asked.
The building has 5 flats so not sure if that's caused confusion? Its not a new conversion or building though.
What shall we do? The energy companies are just trying to sell us new products. Can we easily just set up a new account even though it needs to back date to 6th??
This is the first time I've lived somewhere where I've had to organise/pay bills myself too!

Simple answer, call either supplier in question, give the meter serial number and request that they search this on Ecoes. This gives your current supplier.
All properties should be registered on Ecoes along with the correct meter details and hosts information on your current supply as well.0 -
Note that is is S not the supplier that is responsible for coughing up any sums due up to the 6th - they (S) has to track down P not the supplier. If they can't get money out of P then S will have to pay both shares (although S can pursue them for their share separately.)
Plus this includes any difference that accrues from what actual readings were on the 6th (if different from what was billed.)0 -
Thanks for your replies. We weren't getting very far with it over the weekend so hopefully we can get to the bottom of it this week.
I think Scottish power must have searched Ecoes to find out Ovo were our supplier but didn't didn't have a record of us so all a bit strange...
I'll try and remember to update this thread with the outcome.
To Nada - I think S & P are still working out what is owned to each other regards bills (they were each responsible for different ones) so I shouldn't even need to be involved with that (fingers crossed.0 -
Ok, we've heard from Ovo and they said they took it from Scottish Power by accident in October (how does that happen?). They are going to pass it back to Scottish Power but said something about that might be rejected?
I haven't seen the email my housemate just texted me.0 -
Erroneous transfer-all too common. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks Macman I've not heard of that term before but just looked it up and found a lot more information on the topic.0
