VW Touran 1.9 TDI - 06

Hi,

Not being an expert by any stretch of the imagination where cars are concerned so thought to pop-in and pose my query.

Hopefully some expert will assist.

My Touran (174,000) starting making funny sounds so, mechanic said 'Its your Duelmass Flywheel mate'

OK, so...? 'You need a new one and a clutch to solve the problem.

Fine...thank you > Job done £800.00 > drives fine :-)

But, the noise is still there? Sort of popping sound?...

'Oh, that's your cam mate, need a new one'

But did you not check first to see it it was that in the first place?

It turned out the the flywheel needed changing anyway so heyho.

Anyway, so now I need a new cam thingy as its worn out.

He tells me this will cost in the region of £1k!

Any mechanic out there who can throw some light on this for me please in terms of cost and where to go near sunny Wolverhampton?

Many Thanks

I'd phone around if I were you. £1k for a cam belt (and tensioners AND you will need the water pump done at the same time) is a bit excessive.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

As above seems he misdiagnosed it. Or failed to diagnose all the issues.

My Touran is coming up for 5 years old and the garage rang me today about its MOT to book it in. One recommended job at this age is cambelt and water pump replacement and they quoted me £349 including parts and labour. I know it's being serviced at the same time, but the chap told me that was their standard price for the job. It's the local VW dealer.

Sounds a lot less than you've been quoted....

If it's the cambelt and water pump then my VW Main dealer charged me £349 to do that on my Passat just before Christmas. Slightly different engine but the offer applied to any VW TDI

    Definitely worth phoning round.

Edit - Are you sure it's the cambelt and not the camshaft? You wouldn't nromally spot a cambelt being worn out but changed on time or distance.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • do you mean the engine camshaft plus belt kit with water pump?
  • 1.9TDI PDs do have well-known issues with cam-lobe wear when serviced using incorrect specification oil or irregularly, so it is possible the camshaft could be worn and requiring replacement at that mileage.

What's the vehicle's service history like? Done every 10K with proper oil meeting the VW 505.00 or greater spec, or serviced whenever using any old oily gloop?

Normally it's only the PD 150 that's known for that fault. Not heard it happening on the 130 which seems to have a reputation as being a hugely reliable engine.

Plenty of 130PDs with similar issues known on various Skoda, Ford and VW forums, but for some reason the SEAT forums hardly mention the 130. Don't know why that is.

Certainly more common on the 150, but the 130s do suffer.
