Travel insurance with pre existing conditions

Recently lost the full cost of a holiday when unable to travel due to death of my father because he died due to a pre existing condition. Father was not going on the holiday. Now looking for insurance which includes cover for my mother's pre existing conditions. Again she will not be travelling. Any advice.

It's going to be interesting to read the replies to this as it's really complicated, and I'm curious.....In MY mind I don't see how that would work, but I'm no expert.

Hopefully someone comes along to give you an answer. In the meantime, have you tried contacting a broker?
  • You're right it is complicated. Tried to fight the case last time but without success. Not tried a broker as yet.

As far as I'm concerned insurance companies are in the business of NOT paying out, the less they payout = more profit, my warped theory! If most were unwilling to pay out during the black ash incident, which in my mind is a natural disaster, therefore it should be covered, their get out clause is always in the fine print!

Therefore the onus is upon us, the insured, to ensure that we take out the correct level of cover based on our specified requirements and ALWAYS read the small print/get out clause.

I fully understand why you would want to cover yourself though! Sorry for your loss.

It can be difficult but the other option is to make sure you minimise the loss if you do have to cancel, eg booking cancellable hotels & flights, or use cheap flights so you won't lose too much if you do have to cancel. You can get good value hotel bookings cancellable up to the date of arrival.

Or don't book in advance, book last minute (if you want to go at peak times this may be risky but off peak it should be easy). Getting flights last minute can be pricey but can often get cheap packages, or look into other ways of getting there eg driving to France/Spain etc.
