Bad credit report?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question, I'm really ignorant about all things money related.
Back in 2008 I had a student account with Natwest. My mother stole my credit card details and rang up a debt of about £1400, completely without me knowing. I got the phone calls demanding payment etc etc and eventually we settled on me paying back about £500 and calling it even.
That was the last I even thought about that incident until recently. I'm looking to take out a mortgage on a new house but am worried that the incident with Natwest is going to come back to haunt me. Will that cause a problem? Or has it been so long since it happened that it's now been cancelled?

Have you checked your credit reports to see what shows regarding this account? If not, then do so.
Also if it was never formally agreed it was fraud by someone else, then you may find and member of Natwest (RBOS) group may not want to deal with you over a mortgage.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks for the advice. Do you have a recommendation for a website in which I can check my credit report?0

Get reports for £2 direct from each of the 3 CRAs.

Sites that try to give you reports from more than one in one go are often inaccurate, do not show complete data, or are not up to date. They are a rip off in most cases.
Best way is you go get your files direct. That way you know they are the most complete and up to date ones.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

If it wasn't your debt why did you pay it? Sounds as if you defaulted. Rather than the matter being treated as fraud.0 -

Because the card used was in my name. It was fraud, but it was by my mother and I'm hardly going to bring up any legal action against her.0 -

This isn't a given - lots of people can and do instigate legal action against their parent or offspring.
Obviously there was a big breakdown in trust between you which is very sad, and your decision to not pursue this may be morally laudable, but can come back to bite you now.0 -
True. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so testy!
I really hope it doesn't come back to bite me.0 -

She didn't have concern for you, her son, when she stole your card.
You should have reported it and let her face the consequences. All that glitters is not gold.0
