Windows 8 side bar

I recently bought a laptop with Windows 8. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to disable the black side bar, which keeps showing every time the pointer goes anywhere near the right of the screen? Not only is it driving me (more) crazy but when it happens I lose all of the tabs which are open and have to start all over again.
Very frustrated with it and want my old laptop back! Tia

Are you using 8 or 8.1? There's an option in 8.1 which reduces how often it appears.
But it shouldn't kill tabs or anything though; you should just be able to move the mouse leftwards, away from it, and it should go away again.
It's called (no idea why) the Charms Bar by the way, which might help you find solutions.0 -
Right click taskbar, properties, navigation tab, remove tick from appropriate box (First one).
Charms will still open from bottom right corner.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Thank you for your reply Jivesinger it's Windows 8.1. I hope the solution below will stop me losing tabs.
Thank you spud I've done what you suggested, just need to wait and see if it works - it's not that I have no faith in you, it's me!

It can (as said) be disabled when the mouse pointer goes to the top right-hand corner of the screen but I found it still getting in the way at times. Winaero Charms Bar Killer disables it completely. Had this installed for a while now and all seems well. Mentioned in quite a few places on the Internet if you want to research it.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0

It works for me, it does help when closing a program and you miss the x,
But I still get it if I go to bottom right corner.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Thank you for the info mart, I've followed spud's directions and it seems to have done the trick but as he says it still opens at bottom right hand corner. Should it still grate on me I'll definitely try using Winaero.0

You can get back to Win.7 if you prefer that.
Got to Classis.shell.net and download the free app, this worked for me on Google Chrome.:)You live..You learn.:)0 -
I actually thought we were going to get a whole W8.1 thread without a Classic Shell post.........Ah well!..;):DYou can get back to Win.7 if you prefer that.

I used Classic Shell from it's early days for Win 7 and various machines with Vista that passed through my hands.
But recently I've found it to be becoming bloated/intrusive and so dropped it.
Now on 8.1, and not bothering.Move along, nothing to see.0
