Why would an MBNA credit card application require my work telephone number?

To verify you work there.0

So they can call you if behind on payments as another contact number, eek, used to have a colleague say well if you give it, their legally obliged to call..
I was asked for a work's number on a short term loan application this week, there was no escaping affordability check either, upshot I wasn't and haven't been phoned at work, so it could be worse0 -
I see. Felt it a little unnecessary but I understand the reasoning.0

But do they actually call to verify that?
I'm not allowed personal calls at work so I wouldn't give out the work number. I'd always stick my mobile number in again if it wouldn't let me proceed without it.
And google could surely provide a work number for the business you put down if you're applying fraudulently for that part.0 -
I put my mobile number in the work number field.
I answered a call from my manager once, so it's technically a work number. All that glitters is not gold.0 -
