Car Insurance - Pizza Delivery

Hi,

I am hoping to start work as a part time pizza delivery driver using my own car but I would like some clarification on insurance.

At the interview the employer said that once I clock in for work, my car would be insured under the company's third party policy until I finish the shift so I would not need to cover my work usage on my own insurance policy or add the miles/etc or tell my insurer.

I currently have a fully comp policy on my car which covers social and commuting only, and my main dayjob (office based) is on the policy.

My main questions are:

-- Is it correct that the employer can cover my insurance during work hours or would I still hold legal responsibility to insure my own vehicle as well as / instead of them?

-- Would I have to declare on my own policy renewal (coming up in 2 months) about the delivery job even if it's being insured by the company and is not my main employment?

-- Would I have to add my expected delivery related miles to my own policy mileage (this would effectively double from 5,000 to 10,000 annually) even though those miles are being insured by the company policy?

-- If I do have to add my work usage to my policy, this puts the premium up from £350-400 to about £800+ as Admiral (my current insurer) doesn't seem to cover commercial use on the comparison's I've done. Would I definately need commercial use for the pizza delivery?

Would be grateful for any advice!
TIA

I suspect your insurance will want too know about this extra work. Unoless you told them your a pizza delivery driver in your own vehicle when taking out the policy.

Also if the employers cover is only 3rd party you lose your car if you have afault accident whilst delivering. Will it cover your vehicle 3rd party or comprehensive?

You'll find that the vast majority of insurers won't allow fast food delivery on their policies.

Main reasons being is that delivery drivers are seen to be more at risk given they're paid per delivery, so the more deliveries the more money. To make more deliveries you're likely to drive faster/not as safe.

Not saying this about you, but that's how the majority of insurers see it. I tried the same when I was in my early twenties. I could only find one insurer and they wanted near 5 grand :)
  • I agree with the others. I would also want a copy of the policy from the employer - and a copy of the new policy every time it is renewed (and make sure I asked for it).

I've quite a few posts here and on Pepipoo from people who were doing takeaway deliveries with only SDP insurance in place and ended up walking home with a fixed penalty for no insurance. Delivery drivers are an easy target for police as they are easy to spot and often don't have appropriate insurance in place. So definitely make sure you have the details of your employer's policy to hand, and preferably keep a copy of the insurance certificate in the car.

Your main insurers will almost certainly require you to tell them about your part time job even if you don't need your policy to cover you for deliveries - it's a standard question when you take out a policy.

Quite a few firms do topup blanket cover, no need to tell your insurance as their is a policy to cover that work. Courriers have the same also. It does only cover 3rd party, directly via your own you would cost 2-3k
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

As above, you'll need to tell your insurers about the change in your employment, whether or not you use your own car and whether or not you need them to provide cover for it.

only change of job, not change of use

Bear in mind the employer's insurance doesn't cover commuting.

So it is important to tell your insurer about this extra part time job and get appropriate cover for your commute to this work. (Your current commuting cover will only be for journeys to and from your main job)

There's an interesting topical thread on Pepipoo at the moment.

If you're not familiar with Pepipoo, bear in mind the website specialises in helping out technically on motoring convictions. The posters do not judge and just provide technical advice.

The police wont hear a word, unless you have the correct insurance on your own insurance you will be walking.
Thats how they roll these days.
Certainly dont trust "what the boss says" If he has a certificate bearing your car reg, fair enough, but I can not see the police accepting word of mouth.
