P800

I am slightly baffled, so would appreciate any advice!

I have just received a P800 for the tax year 12/13 stating that I have underpaid tax to the sum of £400. This has come as a bolt out the blue. It apparently relates to Oct/Nov/Dec 2012 when I claimed JSA for three months before returning to paid employment in January 2013.

The figures appear to be correct, but I have only checked these cursorily at the moment. My main query relates to the time scale: is it usual/acceptable for a demand to be sent to me over two years later? I have been told that the information only became available to Inland Revenue in Dec 14... how can this be the case when my claim ceased in Jan 13?

I had one of these as well. My Tax code was reduced to W750L. After my Agency had processed all the P45's the other Agencies I had been working for, my Tax code was re-adjusted to W1750L.

This may well happen to you once HMRC have processed all your P45s.

I would make sure you double check the jsa figure on the calculation. If you've only just received it, its likely that an estimate has been used, which may not be correct.
If the amount of jsa actually paid is less, then you might not owe as much. You just need to get the actual figure and call HMRC to amend the calculation.
The job centre is generally not very good at providing figures to the tax office, which is why its taken so long for the tax office to tell you that you owe money.
Anything I post on here is my own personal opinion, and quite likely not the view of my employer. My knowledge may not be up-to -the minute current, but I'll give you the best I can.
  • I received 2 P800s for 11/12 and 12/13, all in all stating I owed just short of £300. The reason... I had claimed JSA whilst in employment - which I have never done. I sat down and after going over bank statements etc to double check their figures (saying I was paid £2800ish of JSA, was actually £300ish) I worked out in my favour. Just waiting for their response...
