How do architects charge?

Bit of an open-ended question I know, so a few more details...
Longer-term (3-5 years out) we'd really like to extend our house in some way, shape or form - not least, to give us a bathroom we can swing a cat in. :rotfl:
We've thought about this in quite some detail & have at least 4 options in mind, ranging from fairly minor works to a major project.
However - we really think we should get some expert advice to ensure we've not missed any ways to make the most of the property - hence looking at architects.
The thing is though, given what we're seeking is so vague - just advice really! - we're not sure about how to approach them. Would it simply be a question of paying for a few hours of their time to discuss options? Do architects do "free" initial consultations?
Any advice greatly appreciated - I'm going to contact a couple of practices in the next few months but would be nice to know in advance how they tend to work.

Since your approach is vague, I would be looking at the adverts in the local magazines put through your letterbox, or local recommendations. Get these people along to discuss, on an initial consultation, FOC basis. Work out who is creative, sensible, commercially aware, and easy to work with. Then go ahead with this person to firm up some ideas.
Many Architectural Technicians and others are fine with domestic work - there is not a need for expensive office accomodation and high qualifications. But be aware that without this you may get bland, simple results where the individual is used to cheap briefs and cheap design.0 -
We looked at several firms and two came out to have a look at our property and came up with very rough proposals before we engaged one of them.
Then, there was an hourly charge for their work, plus travel costs etc. Separate charge for submission of planning app, building regs app and preparation of a tender pack for us.0
