On daughter's work PC she has to keep changing her password monthly which is annoying her.
Is there a way to stop it asking her to do this?

I suspect it's Win7, but haven't checked.

no, unless it's her business. It's probably company/network/domain policy

When I worked I had to set a new password on my pc monthly - it was our IT Department's requirement. This is a common security policy when working for government departments, local authorities or similar.
  • And hopefully her IT dept are enforcing password history, so she can't use the same one again for another 6/12/24 months. :D

It's probably done for a good reason- imagine if her colleague found out her password and used her account instead of theirs to periodically slate the boss/distribute naughty pics

And then all that happens is the new password is written in a post it and stuck to the monitor.

Same here. Nothing to stop her using same password with a number on the end that she increases by one each month?

Apart from a domain policy with a set password length and complexity. Ours won't key you use almost the same password so oldpassword2 won't work after oldpassword1, there is also a special character requirement as well as upper and lower case letters.

Our Manager used to prowl the office either after we went home or early morning. Anyone who had any post-its (no matter what was on them) stuck to their monitors had them removed! If there was any evidence of a password being either written down or shared with a colleague it was deemed a disciplinary offence!

Possibly but then that becomes a potential disciplinary offence. There's also the fact if the account is misused who gets the blame, the account owner, and saying "its not me I put the password on my monitor" is not likely to be a great defence!

It s not a bad idea, how many people never change passwords, or use the same password everywhere? You only need to look a the username/email/password breeches that are in the news on a monthly basis to know that changing a password regularly, and not having one simple common password is a simple security measure we should all use.

It all depends, as others have said, on the employer's IT policy.
I ussed to work for Siemens and they had a policy of requiring a new password every 12 weeks.
Mind you, they also used security cards to securely digitally-sign stuff, so double security in place.

In my mind, it's good practice and should be encouraged.
