1) how do you know there's damp?
2) what is causing the damp?
3) how bad is the damp?
4) which floor - ground/1st?
5) height? Floor level or ceiling?
6) long-standing? Extensive?
7) what heating in the house?
8) what other activities (eg drying clothes? where?)
9) What ventilation in the room?
10) is the chimney in use? How? How often?
PS - my car is making a knocking noise. What fix would there be for this and would it be exspencive?0 -
1) small patch next to the Fire place has damp I'm not stupid.
2) I assume it's caused by the coal fire which is being used so maybe due to the salts in the air or something?
3) would not know how bad it is till I get it inspected by a professional but the owner is getting a damp proof cource done before I move in.
4) ground floor lounge
5) Middle heihght of the fire place left side so about 1 metre from ground.
6) not sure
7) gas central heating
8) Not sure but not in the same room.
9) there is air vents
10) not sure how often but is being used.
P.s I recommended a specialist for your carmaybe kwik fit haha

so peeling wallpaper? damp to the touch? Smell? Discolouration of paint......?
2) I assume it's caused by the coal fire which is being used so maybe due to the salts in the air or something?
then use wood instead of coal. Or a different type of coal. And it will dry out. Though I doubt your assumption is correct!
3) would not know how bad it is till I get it inspected by a professional but the owner is getting a damp proof cource done before I move in.
dpc course will make no difference due to 5) below
4) ground floor lounge so unlikely to be gutters, or rain down the chimney
5) Middle heihght of the fire place left side so about 1 metre from ground. so won't be dpc. Is there a down pipe outside at that point?
6) not sure
7) gas central heating in regular use? Is the property lived in? If not, condensation caused by cold damp air
8) Not sure but not in the same room.
9) there is air vents working not blocked? People often do....
10) not sure how often but is being used.

Thanks G.m. I've got a 2Nd viewing tomorrow so I can look in more detail then. I might ask the neighbours some questions to as they seemed to have had damp problems in past which has been resolved.0

Good move.
Can I just say well done to you, G_M. After the rude initial response from the OP, I'd have clicked off this thread without looking back. Some people don't realise the advice you're giving for free is what, in an age before the internet, you'd have had to pay for...0 -
